About Exam

The Indian Foreign Service is the administrative diplomatic civil service under Group A and Group B of the Central Civil Services of the executive branch of the Government of India. An Indian Foreign Service officer spends most of his time abroad. The members of the IFS represent the country in the international territory. The IFS is unlike other civil services as it deals with the country's external affairs like diplomacy, trade and cultural relations. The IFS is responsible for framing the Government's foreign policies and management of Indian missions abroad.

Eligibility

Candidates have to fulfil the following criteria: 

• Citizen of India or subject of Nepal or Bhutan or Tibetan Refugee or PIO

• Age should be between 21 to 32 years

• Candidate should be a graduate with Botany, Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Science, Chemistry, Mathematics, Geology, Physics, Zoology or Statistics, Forestry, Agriculture or Engineering

Maximum number of attempts:

• General Category: 6 Attempts

• OBC Category: 9 Attempts

• SC/ST Category  : No Limit

Exam Process

• Application Form is available on website provided (www.upsconline.nic.in)

• Application fee: Rs. 100/-

• SC/ST category and Female can register for free


Pattern

Preliminary Exam - Objective type

2 Paper - 200 marks each - 2 Hours for each paper - Both the papers are on the same day

Negative Marking - 1/3rd marks for every wrong answer


Mains Exam - Essay Type

6 Papers are there in total out of which General English & General Knowledge are the compulsory Papers of 300 marks each and of 3 hours each.

4 question papers will be from the optional subjects chosen by the candidate - Candidates have to choose 2 subjects from options available which are of 300 marks each.
